How reviews affect your lead conversion rate

Before someone calls a contractor, they want evidence that other people did and were glad they did. Reviews are that evidence.

How reviews affect your lead conversion rate, LeadWise Marketing guide cover

Letting a stranger into your home, or trusting them with a roof or an electrical panel, is a big decision. People look for evidence that others made the same decision and were happy with it.

Reviews provide that evidence, which is why they affect conversion rate so directly.

Where reviews influence the decision

  • In search results. Star ratings in Google Business Profiles and Local Services Ads shape which business people tap on.
  • On your landing page. Reviews reassure people who arrived from an ad and do not know you.
  • In your ads. A short quote in a Meta ad or a review count in Google ad assets can raise click-through rates.
  • After the enquiry. People often check reviews again before the quote appointment.

How to show reviews on a landing page

  1. Near the top. A star rating and review count close to the headline.
  2. Next to the form. One or two short reviews beside the call to action, where doubt is highest.
  3. Relevant to the page. On a water heater page, show reviews that mention water heaters.
  4. With names and places. "Maria, Pasadena" is more credible than "Happy customer".
  5. From a verifiable source. Link to your Google profile, or embed reviews from it.

Avoid long carousels that nobody clicks through, and never write or edit reviews yourself.

What makes a review persuasive

  • Mentions the specific service
  • Names the team member
  • Describes the problem and the result
  • Mentions something people worry about, such as tidiness, punctuality or price being as quoted

You cannot write your customers' reviews, but you can prompt them: "If you have a minute, it helps us a lot if you mention what we fixed and who came out."

How to get more reviews

  • Ask on the day the job is finished, while the customer is pleased.
  • Send a direct link by text. Every extra step loses people.
  • Make it someone's job. The technician asks in person; the office sends the link.
  • Reply to every review. It shows future customers that you care.
  • Follow platform rules. Google does not allow incentives for reviews, or selectively asking only happy customers in some cases. Check the current Google review policies.

Illustrative example

These numbers are invented to show the effect.

A roofing landing page converts 4% of visitors. The only reviews are at the bottom. After moving a star rating under the headline and two specific reviews beside the form, the page converts 5.2% over the next six weeks with the same traffic. That is 30% more leads for the same ad spend.

Handling negative reviews

A few negative reviews make the positive ones more believable. What matters is how you respond: briefly, calmly, and with an offer to put it right. Prospects read your replies.

Where to start

Count your reviews from the last 90 days. If it is fewer than one a week, set up a text-based review request for every completed job. Then check your landing page against the landing page checklist and your profile against the Google Business Profile guide.

Questions owners ask

How many reviews does a service business need?

There is no fixed number. What matters is having more recent, specific reviews than the competitors people compare you to.

Should I put reviews on my landing page or link to Google?

Both. Show a few short reviews on the page for convenience, and link to your Google profile so people can see them all.

Can I offer a discount for a review?

Google's policies do not allow incentives in exchange for reviews. Ask politely and make it easy instead.

How do I ask customers for Google reviews?

Ask in person when the job is finished and the customer is happy, then text your direct review link the same day. Ask every customer rather than only the ones you expect to be happy, and never offer money or discounts in exchange, which breaks Google's policies. More in Google Business Profile for contractors.
