Google Business Profile for contractors: Turning your listing into leads

When someone searches for a service near them, the map listings often appear before any website. A well-kept profile is free lead generation.

Search "electrician near me" and, in most places, a map with three businesses appears before the regular results. Those listings come from Google Business Profiles. For a lot of local trades, they bring in more calls than the website does.

And they are free.

How Google chooses who appears

Google says local results are based mainly on relevance, distance and prominence. You cannot change where the searcher is. You can influence the other two.

  • Relevance is how well your profile matches the search. Categories, services and description all count.
  • Prominence is how well known your business is. Reviews, ratings, links and mentions across the web all play a part.

Setup that matters most

  1. Primary category. Pick the one that best describes your main service, such as "Roofing contractor" rather than "Contractor". Add secondary categories for other real services.
  2. Service area. If you travel to customers, set your service area and hide your address if customers do not visit you.
  3. Services. List each service you offer, with a short description. These help match specific searches.
  4. Hours. Keep them accurate, including holidays. If you take emergency calls, say so.
  5. Phone number. Use a number you answer. If you use a tracking number, make it the primary number and keep your main number as an additional one.
  6. Website link. Point it to a relevant page, with UTM parameters so you can see profile traffic in analytics.

Reviews

For most people choosing a contractor, reviews decide it. They look at the rating, how many reviews there are, how recent they are, and how you reply.

  • Ask every happy customer, ideally on the day you finish the job. A direct link by text works best.
  • Reply to every review, good or bad, briefly and professionally.
  • Do not buy reviews or offer incentives. It breaks Google's policies and can get reviews removed.

Photos and posts

Add real photos of your team, vehicles and finished jobs, and keep adding them. Photos help people trust a profile and give it more visual weight on a phone screen. Posts can announce seasonal offers or new services, although their effect on ranking is modest.

Keep it honest

Do not add keywords or city names to your business name unless they are part of your real, registered name. Google treats keyword stuffing as a policy violation and can suspend the profile.

Tracking what the profile produces

The profile's own performance report shows calls, website clicks and direction requests. For better data:

  • Use a tracked phone number on the profile
  • Add UTM parameters to the website link
  • Record "Google Business Profile" as a lead source in your CRM or spreadsheet

Then you can compare it to paid channels on cost per booked job, where it will usually win.

Google Business Profile tips for contractors

Most contractors are service-area businesses: they go to the customer. That changes a few settings.

  • Hide your address if customers do not visit it. Google's guidelines ask service-area businesses to show a service area instead of an address where they do not serve customers. Set the areas you actually cover.
  • Pick the primary category that describes your main work, for example "Plumber", "Electrician", "Roofing contractor" or "HVAC contractor". Add secondary categories only for work you really do.
  • List every service. Water heater installation, drain cleaning and repiping are separate services, and listing them helps your profile match more specific searches.
  • Ask for reviews after every finished job. Text your review link the same day. Steady, recent reviews help more than a burst once a year.
  • Show your real work. Photos of your team, vans and finished jobs, added regularly, make the profile more convincing than stock images.
  • Keep it in step with your ads. If you run Local Services Ads, your business name, address and hours now sync from this profile, so errors here show up in your ads too.

The profile works alongside your paid channels, not instead of them, and it is often the cheapest source of calls a local trade has.

Where to start

Search for your main service in your area on your phone and look at your profile as a customer would. Check the category, photos, reviews and hours. Fix what looks weak. If you also run Local Services Ads, a strong review profile helps there too.

Questions owners ask

How do I get my business into the Google map results?

Complete your Business Profile accurately, choose the right categories, earn reviews steadily, and keep information up to date. Distance from the searcher also matters, and you cannot control that.

Does the number of reviews matter more than the rating?

Both matter. A high rating from very few reviews is less convincing than a slightly lower rating from many recent ones.

Can I have a profile without a shop address?

Yes. Service-area businesses can hide their address and show a service area instead, as long as they meet Google's eligibility guidelines.

Should contractors show their address on Google Business Profile?

Only if customers visit you there. If you travel to your customers, hide the address and set a service area instead, which is what Google's guidelines ask of service-area businesses. You still need a real address to verify the profile, but it does not have to be shown.
