Google Ads for plumbers: A campaign setup that pays for itself
Plumbing clicks are expensive because plumbing jobs are urgent and valuable. That is not a reason to avoid Google Ads. It is a reason to set them up carefully.

High click costs scare some plumbers away from Google Ads. They should instead encourage careful setup. When one emergency job is worth several hundred dollars and a repipe is worth thousands, a well-run account can pay for itself many times over.
Structure: emergency and planned
Emergency campaign. Keywords such as "emergency plumber", "burst pipe repair" and "24 hour plumber". Ads lead with speed and phone number. The schedule matches when someone can actually answer, and budget is set so ads run all day.
Planned work campaign. Keywords for drain cleaning, water heater replacement, repiping and fixture installation. Ads lead with price ranges, reviews and financing. Each service gets its own ad group and, ideally, its own landing page.
This split matters because the two groups behave differently. Emergency callers book fast and rarely compare. Planned-work customers compare quotes and read reviews.
Targeting your service area
Target the areas you actually serve, not a wide radius around your office. Use "presence" location targeting, so ads show to people in your area rather than people who have shown interest in it. Lower bids or exclude areas where travel makes jobs unprofitable.
Call ads and call assets
Add a call asset to every campaign so your number appears in the ad. For emergency searches on mobile, consider call ads, which prompt a call directly. Make sure calls from ads are tracked as conversions with a minimum duration, so short hang-ups do not count.
Negative keywords
Plumbing searches attract job seekers, DIYers and people looking for parts. Start with negatives such as:
- jobs, salary, apprentice, training, course
- DIY, how to, youtube, video
- parts, supply, store, home depot
- free, cheap if you do not compete on price
Review the search terms report weekly for the first few months. See negative keywords for service businesses.
Landing pages
Send planned-work ads to pages about that service, with price ranges, reviews, photos and a click-to-call button at the top. For emergency ads, a short page with a large phone number and a promise of response time works best. Speed matters on mobile. See the service business landing page checklist.
Tracking and bidding
Track calls from ads, calls from your website, and form submissions. Then import booked jobs back into Google Ads if you can, so automated bidding learns what a real customer looks like. See offline conversion tracking.
Illustrative example
These numbers are invented to show the math.
A plumber spends $4,000 a month at an average of $50 per click, for 80 clicks. One in four clicks becomes a call, and half of those calls book: 10 jobs. At an average job value of $650, that is $6,500 in revenue, and many of those customers will call again.
Budget
Start with enough budget to get meaningful data: usually at least a few thousand dollars a month in competitive metro areas. A campaign that runs out of budget by 10 a.m. misses the rest of the day's emergencies. For guidance, see how much Google Ads costs for service businesses.
Where to start
Split emergency and planned campaigns, add strong negatives, and make sure every call is tracked. Those three changes fix most plumbing accounts.

Questions owners ask
Is Google Ads worth it for plumbers?
For most plumbers, yes, if the account is set up well. Search reaches people who need a plumber now, and the job values usually justify the click costs.
How much should a plumber spend on Google Ads?
Enough to get consistent data, often a few thousand dollars a month in competitive areas. Work backwards from what you can pay per booked job.
Should plumbers run Local Services Ads as well?
Usually yes. Local Services Ads charge per lead and appear above normal search ads. Running both gives you more visibility on the same search.
