Lead Generation

How to get more plumbing leads without buying shared ones

When a pipe bursts, nobody browses. They call the first plumber who looks trustworthy and answers. Most plumbing lead generation comes down to being that plumber.

Plumbing demand does not wait. A keyword tool estimate puts US searches for "emergency plumber" at around 60,000 a month, and each of those people wants someone within the hour. The plumbers who win those jobs are easy to find, look trustworthy and answer the phone.

Here is how to get more of those calls without relying on leads that are sold to three other plumbers.

Be at the top when someone searches

For most plumbers, search is the main source of new customers. There are three places to appear:

  • Local Services Ads, which sit at the top of the page in many US markets and charge per lead. See our Local Services Ads guide.
  • Google Search ads, which charge per click and give you control over keywords, messages and landing pages. See Google Ads for plumbers.
  • The map listings, driven by your Google Business Profile, which are free.

Running all three means a homeowner can see your name two or three times on the same results page. That repetition builds trust quickly.

Split emergency and planned work

An emergency caller wants speed. A homeowner planning a water heater replacement or a bathroom repipe wants a fair price and a clear explanation. Putting both in one campaign means one message fits neither.

Give emergency searches their own campaign with a phone-first ad, a schedule that matches when you can answer, and a budget that does not run out by noon. Give planned work its own campaign that leads to a page with prices or price ranges, financing options and reviews.

Answer every call

The phone is where plumbing money is made. If calls go to voicemail, the caller usually tries the next result. Track how many calls you miss each week. If it is more than a few, fix that before spending more on ads.

Illustrative example

These numbers are invented to show the effect.

A plumber gets 120 calls a month from ads and misses 25 of them. If a third of answered calls become jobs worth $450, those 25 missed calls represent roughly eight jobs and $3,600 in revenue that was paid for and not collected.

Keep your Google Business Profile busy

Choose "Plumber" as your primary category, list every service you offer, set your service area to where you actually want to work and add photos from real jobs. Reply to every review. For many plumbers, the profile brings in as many calls as paid ads. Our Google Business Profile guide covers the details.

Ask every customer for a review

Reviews decide which plumber gets the call when three appear side by side. Send a review link by text the same day the job is finished, while the customer is still relieved. More in how contractors can get more Google reviews.

Market to the customers you already have

A customer who called you for a blocked drain may need a water heater next year. A short email or text list, a reminder for annual maintenance and a sticker on the water heater with your number all cost very little and bring in repeat work.

Where to start

Check three things this week: how many calls you missed, how many reviews you received and whether your ads are running at night if you take emergency work. Those three answers usually point to the biggest gain.

Questions owners ask

What is the best way to get plumbing leads?

For most plumbers, search: Local Services Ads, Google Search ads and a well-kept Google Business Profile. These reach people who need a plumber today.

Should plumbers buy leads?

Shared leads can fill gaps, but you compete with other plumbers for each one. Leads from your own ads are usually more expensive per lead and cheaper per job.

Do Facebook ads work for plumbers?

Rarely for emergencies, because nobody scrolls Facebook with a burst pipe. They can work for planned jobs such as water heater replacements or repiping.
