Missed call text back: Keep the caller you could not answer
You cannot answer every call from a roof or under a sink. You can make sure every missed caller hears from you within a minute.

Keyword tools estimate around 390 US searches a month for "missed call text back". The idea is simple. When someone calls and you cannot answer, they get a text straight away, instead of a voicemail greeting they will ignore.
Why it works
Most callers do not leave voicemails. They hang up and call the next business on the list. A text that arrives within seconds interrupts that. It tells the caller they reached a real business, that someone will call back and, often, lets them reply with details.
For service businesses that are often on a job, this can recover a meaningful share of missed calls. See what missed calls really cost a service business.
What the text should say
Keep it short, human and specific:
Hi, this is Mike from Coastline Plumbing. Sorry I missed your call, I'm on a job. I'll call you back within 15 minutes. If it's urgent, reply here with what's going on.
Include:
- Your name and business name.
- A reason you missed the call, briefly.
- A clear callback time you can keep.
- An invitation to reply.
Avoid sales language, links and long messages. The goal is to hold the conversation until you can call.
How to set it up
Most call tracking platforms, CRMs and business phone systems offer missed call text back. The basic setup:
- Connect your business number, or use a tracking number that forwards to your phone.
- Write the message.
- Set the rules, such as only during business hours or with a different message after hours.
- Route replies to whoever handles leads, by text, app or email.
Rules for business texting in the US
Business texting from standard local numbers in the US generally requires registration with carriers through a process known as A2P 10DLC. Most texting providers handle this for you, but unregistered messages can be blocked or filtered.
Consent rules also apply to marketing texts. Replying once to a person who has just called you is different from sending promotions, but rules vary. Keep missed call texts to the conversation the caller started, do not add them to marketing lists without consent, and ask your provider or a lawyer if you are unsure.
Call back when you said you would
The text buys time. It does not replace the call. If you promise 15 minutes, call in 15 minutes. If replies come in, answer them. A missed promise can lose the job faster than no text at all.
Measure it
Track how many missed calls received a text, how many replied or answered your callback, and how many became booked jobs. Call tracking makes this straightforward.
Illustrative example
These numbers are invented to show the effect.
A roofer misses 40 calls a month. Before text back, they reach 12 on callback. After text back, they reach 26, and 8 book inspections. At a 30% close rate on $12,000 average jobs, that is more than two extra jobs a month.
Where to start
Count your missed calls for one week. If the number surprises you, set up text back and a clear callback routine.

Questions owners ask
What is missed call text back?
An automatic text sent to callers you could not answer, usually within seconds, letting them know you will call back.
Is missed call text back legal?
Generally, replying to a caller is acceptable, but US business texting requires carrier registration and consent rules apply to marketing messages. Check with your provider and, if unsure, a lawyer.
Does it replace an answering service?
No. It works well alongside one. An answering service handles calls live; text back catches the ones that still slip through.
