Retargeting for service businesses: Bringing back visitors who did not call

Someone who visited your page last week already knows who you are. For considered jobs, a well-timed reminder can be the cheapest lead you get.

Retargeting for service businesses, LeadWise Marketing guide cover

Most people who visit a service business landing page leave without calling or filling in the form. Some were not ready. Some got distracted. Some are comparing you with two other companies.

Retargeting gives you a chance to be remembered while they decide.

How retargeting works

When someone visits your website, the Meta pixel and Google tag can add them to an audience, provided they have given consent where required. You can then show ads to that audience on Facebook, Instagram, YouTube and Google's Display network.

You can also build audiences from people who watched your videos, engaged with your Facebook or Instagram page, or opened an instant form without submitting it.

Which audiences to use

Audience Why Suggested window
Visited a service page, did not enquire Showed interest in a specific job 7 to 30 days
Opened a lead form, did not submit Very close to enquiring 3 to 14 days
Watched most of a video ad Engaged with your message 14 to 60 days
Existing customers Upsell maintenance or new services Up to 180 days

Exclude people who already enquired, so you do not pay to advertise to your own leads.

Match the window to the job

  • Emergency work: decisions happen within hours. A retargeting window longer than a few days mostly reaches people who have already fixed the problem.
  • Planned repairs: a week or two.
  • Major projects such as solar, roofing and remodeling: 30 to 90 days, because people take time, get several quotes and talk to their partner.

What retargeting ads should say

People already know roughly what you do. Now give them reasons to choose you:

  • Reviews from customers who had the same job
  • Before and after photos
  • Your process, what happens after they get in touch
  • Answers to objections, such as financing, timelines or warranties
  • A clear, low-effort next step, such as a free inspection

Frequency matters

Retargeting audiences are small, so the same people can see your ads many times a day. Keep an eye on frequency and refresh creative regularly. Being remembered is good; being followed around the internet is not.

Retargeting relies on tracking. Make sure your cookie banner and privacy policy are accurate, and that tags only fire where visitors have consented if the law requires it, as it does in much of Europe. Retargeting audiences will be smaller as a result. That is expected.

How to measure it

Retargeting often looks very efficient in platform reports, because it reaches people who were likely to enquire anyway. To judge its real value:

  • Compare cost per booked job from retargeting with your main campaigns
  • Check whether total leads rise when retargeting runs, not just leads credited to it
  • Test pausing it for a few weeks if your volume allows

Where to start

Set up a single retargeting campaign for service page visitors who did not enquire, with a 14 to 30 day window and review-based creative. For the budget side, read how to split a small ad budget between Google and Meta.

Questions owners ask

Is retargeting worth it for small service businesses?

It can be, especially for higher-value, considered jobs. For emergency services with small websites, audiences may be too small to be useful.

How much should I spend on retargeting?

Usually a small share of total spend, because audiences are small. Increase it only if it produces booked jobs at a good cost.

Does retargeting work with cookie consent?

Yes, but only for visitors who consent where consent is required. Expect smaller audiences in regions with strict rules.

What is the difference between retargeting and remarketing?

In paid ads, very little. Both mean showing ads to people who have already visited your website or engaged with your business. Google tends to call it remarketing, while Meta and most marketers say retargeting. Some people also use remarketing to mean email follow-up.
