How much does PPC management cost? Fees explained for service businesses
A management fee is only expensive if it does not pay for itself. Here is how to tell the difference before you sign.

Keyword tools estimate around 1,300 US searches a month each for "ppc management services" and "google ads management". Most of the people searching want to know two things: what it costs, and whether it is worth it.
Ad spend and management are different costs
Ad spend goes directly to the ad platform. You pay it whether or not you hire help. The management fee pays for the work: research, setup, daily and weekly changes, testing and reporting. Some quotes combine the two into one number. Ask for them separately so you can see how much of your budget reaches the ads.
Common fee models
| Model | Best for | Risk |
|---|---|---|
| Flat monthly fee | Small and medium budgets | Scope creep if not defined |
| Percentage of ad spend | Large, growing budgets | Rewards spending more |
| Flat fee plus percentage | Budgets that change by season | More complex to compare |
| Setup fee | New accounts, new tracking | Paying twice if work is thin |
For most service businesses, a flat fee with a clear scope is the simplest option. A percentage of spend is fair when budgets are large and the work grows with them, but it can create pressure to raise budgets rather than cut waste.
What good management includes
The work that moves results is not glamorous. Look for:
- Campaigns split by service and urgency, as explained in PPC for contractors.
- Weekly search term reviews and a growing negative keyword list.
- Call tracking and form tracking, ideally linked to booked jobs through offline conversion tracking.
- Landing page recommendations, because the page decides how many clicks become leads.
- A monthly report in plain language, with cost per lead and cost per booked job.
When the fee is too high for the budget
A small budget can still work, but the fee should make sense against it. If management costs more than the ad spend, most of your money is paying for effort rather than reach.
Illustrative example
These numbers are invented to show the effect.
A plumber spends $1,200 a month on ads and pays $1,000 a month for management. If the account produces 20 leads, each lead costs $110 in total. Raising ad spend to $2,500 with the same fee might produce 45 leads at about $78 each. The fee is the same, but more of the budget is doing the work.

US and UK pricing
The same fee models are used in both markets. UK quotes may be shown before VAT, and Google adds VAT to ad spend in the UK. Ask whether a quote is in pounds or dollars and whether VAT is included.
How to judge whether it is worth it
After three months, compare total cost (ad spend plus fee) with the number of booked jobs and their value. If the account is producing profitable work, the fee is paying for itself. If you cannot see booked jobs in the reporting, fix tracking first.
Where to start
Before you ask for quotes, gather your average job value, close rate and current monthly budget. Then use our questions to ask a PPC agency to compare answers.
Our PPC management and Google Ads management services use a fixed monthly fee and report on booked jobs. You can request a free audit of your current account.
Questions owners ask
How much does PPC management cost?
It depends on the fee model and scope. Most providers charge a flat monthly fee, a percentage of ad spend, or both, and some add a one-off setup fee. Ad spend is paid separately to the ad platform.
Is a percentage of ad spend a fair way to pay?
It can be for large budgets, but it rewards spending more. For small and medium service businesses, a flat fee with a defined scope is usually easier to judge.
Can I manage PPC myself?
Yes, if you have time to review search terms every week and set up tracking properly. Many owners start themselves and hire help once the budget grows.
