## The short version

- A lead generation agency plans, builds and runs the channels that bring you enquiries, usually paid ads, landing pages, tracking and lead routing.
- The four common pricing models are a monthly management fee, a percentage of ad spend, pay per lead, and a hybrid of these.
- Ad spend is normally separate from the agency fee. Check which one a quote includes.
- Compare quotes on the expected cost per booked job and on who owns the accounts, not on the fee alone.

Keyword tools estimate around 3,600 US searches a month for "lead generation agency", with large swings from month to month. Many of those searches come from business owners trying to work out what they would actually pay and what they would get. This guide explains both.

## What a lead generation agency does

For a service business, a lead generation agency usually covers five things:

1. Strategy: which services, areas and channels to focus on first.
2. Campaigns: building and managing Google Ads, Meta Ads or both.
3. Landing pages: pages matched to each service, built to turn clicks into calls and forms.
4. Tracking: call tracking, form tracking and, ideally, booked-job tracking.
5. Lead handling: instant alerts, missed call text back and follow-up.

Some agencies only run ads. Others sell leads they generate on their own sites. Ask which model you are buying, because it changes who owns the results. Our guide to [choosing a lead generation company](https://leadwisemarketing.com/blog/choosing-a-lead-generation-company/) covers the differences.

## The four pricing models

| Model | How it works | Watch for |
|---|---|---|
| Monthly management fee | A fixed fee for agreed work | A clear scope and reporting |
| Percentage of ad spend | The fee rises with your budget | Pressure to spend more |
| Pay per lead | You pay for each enquiry | Shared or low-quality leads |
| Hybrid | A lower fixed fee plus a performance element | How a lead is defined |

A fixed fee is the easiest to budget. A percentage of spend can be fair for large budgets, but it rewards spending more rather than spending better. Pay per lead sounds low risk, but the definition of a lead matters. A form fill from someone outside your area is still a lead unless the contract says otherwise. See [exclusive vs shared leads](https://leadwisemarketing.com/blog/exclusive-vs-shared-leads/) and [pay-per-call leads](https://leadwisemarketing.com/blog/pay-per-call-leads/).

## What should be included

Ask for the scope in writing. A reasonable scope for a service business includes campaign setup, landing pages or landing page changes, call and form tracking, weekly search term reviews, monthly reporting and a named person you can call. Setup fees are common when an agency builds landing pages and tracking from scratch.

## Who owns what

You should own your ad accounts, your tracking numbers where possible, your landing page content and your data. If an agency runs everything in its own accounts, you lose your history when you leave. Ask before you sign.

## US and UK differences

The models are the same on both sides of the Atlantic. In the UK, check whether quotes are shown before or after VAT. In both markets, consent rules apply to marketing calls, texts and emails, so ask how the agency handles consent on forms. For the questions to ask any agency, see [hiring a PPC agency](https://leadwisemarketing.com/blog/hiring-a-ppc-agency/).

## How to compare two quotes

**Illustrative example:**

These numbers are invented to show the comparison.

Agency A charges $1,500 a month and expects 45 qualified leads from a $3,000 ad budget. That is $4,500 in total, or $100 per lead. Agency B charges $900 a month and expects 25 qualified leads from the same budget. That is $3,900 in total, or $156 per lead. The cheaper fee is the more expensive result, if both estimates hold up.

Ask each agency how they arrived at their estimate, and ask for reporting on booked jobs, not just leads. The comparison that matters is [cost per customer](https://leadwisemarketing.com/blog/cost-per-lead-vs-cost-per-customer/).

## Where to start

Write down your average job value, your close rate and the number of extra jobs you want each month. Share them with any agency you talk to. A good agency will turn them into a budget and tell you if the numbers do not work.

Our [done-for-you lead generation](https://leadwisemarketing.com/services/get-leads/) uses a fixed monthly fee, and you keep your ad accounts. You can [request a free audit](https://leadwisemarketing.com/contact/) before deciding anything.

## Questions owners ask

### How much does a lead generation agency cost?

It depends on the pricing model and scope. Most agencies charge a monthly management fee, a percentage of ad spend, a price per lead or a hybrid. Ad spend is usually paid separately, directly to Google or Meta.

### Is pay per lead better than a monthly fee?

Not always. Pay per lead shifts risk to the agency, but lead quality and exclusivity vary. A fixed fee with reporting on booked jobs is often better value for a service business.

### What does a lead generation agency do?

It plans and runs the channels that bring in enquiries, usually paid ads, landing pages and tracking, and makes sure every lead reaches you quickly.
